From Kirkus reviews (US) "Their planet about to be destroyed by a mysterious Disturbance Of Gravity, the bug-sized residents of Gersbach dispatch a desperate mission to Earth in this funny, frenetic Aussie farce. Arriving in a spacecraft disguised as a small terrier – but every inch the fighting vehicle, from its laser-shooting nostrils to the Aft Navigator's Observation Section under the tail – Commanders Belka Sparkleman and Strelka Frunkmaster find their mission to destroy the D.O.G. much complicated not only by nefarious rival Colonel Bars, who has arrived ahead of them in their vehicle's stolen wiener-dog-like prototype, but by the Buckleys, an Earth family whose various members are going through adolescence or other hard times. Into a mare's nest of subplots that eventually coalesce into a grand cross-country chase with a suspenseful, (literally) explosive climax, the authors stir hilarious encounters with Earth creatures of several species, lots of gross mucking about and at the end, just deserts for all. Readers will run toward, not away from this alien invasion.."
From BOOKLIST (US) "Gr. 4–7. A series of mishaps have required the Buckleys to move from the country to the city. Beth and Tom Buckley are doing what they can to make ends meet, while their daughters, Amy and Lucy, try to adjust to city life but find fitting in with their schoolmates a challenge. The realistic family story crashes head-on into quirky sf when the sisters discover that the two apparently stray dogs in their neighborhood are really dog-shaped vehicles from outer space. Both are occupied by tiny Gersbachians, extraterrestrials who have traveled through a wormhole seeking the Disturbance of Gravity (D.O.G.) that is destroying their home planet. As the mechanical canines converge upon the source of the disturbance, the Buckleys’ front yard becomes ground zero in a battle between two mission commanders with very different aims. Offering witty glimpses of both human and alien perspectives, this is an action-packed, cleverly plotted, exuberantly silly story that will delight imaginative middle-graders, particularly those who enjoy tongue-in-cheek sf such as Terry Pratchett’s Only You Can Save Mankind (2005)." —Holly Koelling
From Bookloons reviews (US) "...Justin Ball and Evan Croker have created an action-packed, highly-imaginative tale of tails, based on canine space travel. They hold the reader's attention with subplots converging into a cross-country chase with a suspenseful, explosive climax. I highly recommend Space Dogs as a wonderful tail-wagging tale, a laugh-out-loud, not-to-be-missed read for junior readers, which is also fun for seniors, too.."
From Midwest Book Review (US) "Justin Ball and Evan Croker’s Space Dogs tells of Laika, the first dog in space whose craft is sucked through a wormhole to a planet inhabited by very intelligent, very tiny people. Years later a disturbance emanating through the wormhole from Earth threatens life on the planet, leading to a mission to Earth to destroy the source of the disturbance – in a craft which looks like Laika. The objective is to blend with the locals – but earth cats have another idea in this hilarious story of encounters between very different races."
From Sebastian (age 8), Sydney, Australia "This book is mainly about the planet Gersbach, Commander Belka, Commander Strelka, Colonel Bars and Flanger Damka. My favourite parts are the A.N.O.S. joke, when the Disturbance Of Gravity (DOG) is blown up and when Gavin is arrested and is called Creep Of The Year by the R.S.P.C.A. I recommend this book for boys and girls between the ages of 8-12. It's a great story and I look forward to a sequel. WOOF!"
From Sophie (age 11), Clarence Town Public School. "I really sped through your book (I read it in 3 days – 17-19 June). When Evan came to Clarence Town Public School I eagerly listened to the CD over the PA system. Being me (A typical horse-crazy girl), I generally only read horse books, but when I heard parts of the story, I decided that I was determined to read this story cover to cover. My Mum bought me the book and as soon I got into the car I opened the book and started to read , before I knew it I had been sucked into the book and couldn’t seem to get out . If there were words to describe the way I enjoyed this book I would have put them onto this review but I just couldn’t find the right ones."
